The building is located on Merri Creek and draws upon traditional Islamic elements referenced through contemporary forms and materials. The building’s design was heavily contextualised by its location intended to create a unity between Islamic and Australian cultures.

The building includes five permanent galleries, one exhibition gallery, a theatrette, workshops and a cafe.
